Solar panel installation in Tenerife, designed and installed by an electrician

PiconSolar is the solar side of Voltech Smart Home, based in Costa Adeje. We design self-consumption systems around your real consumption, install them to the Spanish low-voltage regulations (REBT) and handle the legalisation so your surplus is compensated under RD 244/2019. You deal with one qualified electrician from the survey to the handover. English, Español, Polski.

How to contact PiconSolar: options and hours

The fastest route is WhatsApp or a phone call. Send a photo of a recent electricity bill, a photo of the roof and a photo of your consumer unit (cuadro eléctrico) and we can tell you on the first call whether solar makes sense for the property, roughly what size of system fits, and what the next step is. No long forms and no sales visit.

Why solar works so well in the south of Tenerife

Solar output is measured in kWh generated per year for every kWp (kilowatt peak) of panels installed. The south of Tenerife has around 2,800 hours of sunshine a year and a very flat seasonal curve: a December day still produces useful power. That changes how a system is sized compared with mainland Spain or northern Europe.

LocationTypical yield, kWh per kWp per yearWhat it means
South of Englandaround 900Long payback, strong winter drop
Madridaround 1,400Good, but hot summers and cold winters
Tenerife Suraround 1,700 to 1,800High and stable across the year

Heat is the local detail most installers ignore. Crystalline modules lose output as cell temperature rises (the temperature coefficient on the datasheet, typically around -0.3 to -0.4 % per °C of Pmax). We mount with an air gap behind the panels and keep inverters and batteries out of direct sun, because a hot inverter derates and a hot battery ages faster.

How we design a system: the technical checklist

Every quote is built from the same checklist. You receive it in writing with the actual model numbers of the panels, inverter and battery, so you can compare it line by line with any other quote.

StageWhat we checkWhy it matters
Consumption profile12 months of bills, contracted power (potencia contratada), daytime versus evening useSizing against the RD 244/2019 compensation cap, not against roof area
Roof and shadingOrientation, tilt, obstacles (water tanks, aerials, parapets) at different sun anglesPartial shade on one module can pull down a whole string
String designModule Voc at low temperature, Vmp and Imp against the inverter MPPT range and max input currentKeeps the inverter in its efficient window and inside its limits
DC sideSolar cable (H1Z2Z2-K), MC4-compatible connectors from the same system, DC isolator, DC surge protectionMost PV fires start at badly crimped or mixed-brand connectors
AC sideDedicated circuit, MCB and RCD selection, cable sizing for current and voltage dropSafe connection into your consumer unit
Earthing and bondingFrame and structure bonding, earth continuity, earth electrode where neededProtection against faults and lightning-induced surges
CommissioningPolarity, open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, insulation resistance, functional test of protectionsA written test record for your file and your insurer
MonitoringInverter app on your phone, production and consumption measurementYou can see what the system does every day

How we work: the process for every installation

  1. First call or WhatsApp

You send a bill, a roof photo and a photo of the consumer unit. We tell you honestly whether solar is worth it, including when it is not.

  2. Free site survey

We look at the roof, shading, the consumer unit, the meter and the cable route on site, not on satellite images.

  3. Written, itemised quote

Materials with model numbers, labour, paperwork and expected annual generation. No finance pressure and no expiring discounts.

  4. Installation

Typically one to two days on a domestic system: structure, modules, inverter, protection and connection.

  5. Testing and commissioning

Electrical tests, protection tests and monitoring set-up. You get a walk-through of the system and the app.

  6. Legalisation

Electrical installation certificate, registration of the self-consumption installation and the surplus compensation contract with your retailer.

Solar myths in the Canaries that cost people money

“Bigger is always better”

Under RD 244/2019 simplified compensation, the credit for exported surplus cannot exceed the energy part of that month’s bill. Past a certain size you are giving energy away. The right size comes from your consumption, not from how many panels fit on the roof.

“You always need a battery”

If most of your consumption is in daylight (pool pump, air conditioning, home office), extra panels usually return more than a battery. A battery earns its place when your consumption is mostly after dark or you want backup.

“South-facing or nothing”

At this latitude the sun is high for most of the year, so east, west and south-east roofs still perform well. Shade is what really destroys output.

“Solar panels need no maintenance”

Calima dust and salt reduce output, and connectors and inverters age. A yearly check and clean keeps the system producing what it should.

“Paperwork is optional”

Without the electrical certificate and registration the installation is not legal, is usually not covered by insurance, cannot receive grants and does not get surplus compensation.

The paperwork for a legal self-consumption installation

Document or stepWhat it is
CIE (Certificado de Instalación Eléctrica)The low-voltage installation certificate, filed with the Gobierno de Canarias
Registration of self-consumptionEntry of the installation in the regional self-consumption register, which is passed to the national register
DistributorThe distribution company for your supply point is informed and the meter configuration is updated
Surplus compensation contractSigned with your electricity retailer so exported energy is credited on your bill under RD 244/2019
Municipal licence or communicationDepends on the municipality and the building; checked at survey stage
IGIC, not IVA. Installations in the Canary Islands carry the Canarian IGIC instead of the 21% IVA charged on mainland Spain, so the same system costs noticeably less here than on the peninsula.
Grants and tax relief (Gobierno de Canarias programmes, IRPF deductions for energy-efficiency works, IBI and ICIO reductions in some municipalities) change by round and by municipality. We check what is open for your property at quote stage and tell you in which order to apply.

Quick glossary for reading a solar quote

kWp (kilowatt peak)
Panel power under standard test conditions. The size of the system.
kWh
Energy. What your bill charges for and what the system produces.
Inverter / hybrid inverter
Converts DC from the panels to AC for the house. A hybrid inverter also manages a battery.
MPPT
Maximum power point tracker. The inverter input that keeps each string at its best operating point.
String
A group of panels wired in series to one MPPT input.
Antivertido (zero export)
Configuration that prevents any energy being exported to the grid.
Compensación simplificada
The RD 244/2019 mechanism that credits exported surplus against the energy part of your bill.
LFP
Lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry: long cycle life, better tolerance of heat.
DoD (depth of discharge)
How much of the battery’s nominal capacity is actually usable.
CIE / boletín
The official electrical installation certificate in Spain.

Before you contact us: what to have ready

  • A recent electricity bill, ideally with the 12-month consumption graph
  • Photos of the roof, including water tanks, aerials and anything that casts shade
  • A photo of the consumer unit (cuadro eléctrico) with the cover open
  • Whether you want a battery, an EV charger now or later, or backup during power cuts
  • For apartments: whether the roof is private or shared with the community

Frequently asked questions

How long does an installation take?

A typical domestic system is installed in one to two days. Legalisation and the compensation contract take longer and depend on the administration and the distributor.

Can I add a battery to my existing system?

Usually yes. Whether your inverter accepts a battery directly or needs an AC-coupled unit depends on the model. We check it before quoting.

Will the system work during a power cut?

A standard grid-tied inverter switches off during a cut for safety. Backup needs a hybrid inverter with a battery and a backup output wired to selected circuits.

Do you install in apartment buildings?

Yes, where the community roof or your private roof allows it. Community agreement is required for shared roofs.

Do you speak English?

Yes. English, Spanish and Polish.
